For programming, progression and daily target-setting, an AI trainer covers most of what a general-population client needs, and it updates every day rather than every few weeks. A human coach still wins on hands-on technique correction, injury rehab and accountability, so many people use both.

What should an AI personal trainer app actually calculate?

At minimum: BMR (Mifflin-St Jeor, or Katch-McArdle when body fat is known), TDEE from an activity multiplier, a goal-adjusted calorie target, and macros derived from that target. If an app cannot show you those numbers, it is guessing.

How do I judge whether the plan is adapting?

Change one input — sleep, available time, or weight — and see whether tomorrow's targets move. A real adaptive engine responds; a static template does not.

Do I need a wearable?

No. A wearable improves recovery accuracy (especially HRV), but calorie, macro and training targets can be computed from body metrics and logged sessions alone.
